Elizabeth MacDowell is a Visiting Clinical Professor at Chapman with expertise in family law and domestic violence. Under her direction, students in the Chapman Family Violence Clinic represent victims of domestic violence seeking restraining orders and other relief in family court. She also teaches Advanced Family Law and Community Property.

Prior to joining Chapman, Professor MacDowell was in private practice in Los Angeles, where her practice focused on representation of victims of domestic violence in all aspects of family law.  Professor MacDowell also has experience in complex business and employment litigation in state and federal courts, and has litigated claims including breach of contract, unfair competition, defamation and invasion of privacy on behalf of independent film producers, film directors, and writers.  She attended the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, where she was Recent Developments Editor of the Berkeley Women's Law Journal before obtaining her JD in 1999. 

Professor MacDowell has published articles on the interrelationships between legal education, doctrine, and practice in marginalized communities, and on media representations of domestic violence homicide-suicide. Her current research examines court culture and how it impacts domestic violence cases.
