Professor Margaret Thomas is from Long Island, New York. She received a BS in Marketing from Clemson University in 1999. She attended California Western School of Law in San Diego, CA, graduated in April 2003, and was admitted to the Illinois Bar in November 2003.

After graduating law school, Professor Thomas worked for Speiser Krause in Washington, DC. On January 4, 2004, Professor Thomas joined the U.S. Army JAG Corps and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). During her time with the 101st Airborne Division, Professor Thomas held a number of positions, including: Legal Assistance Attorney, Operational and International Law Attorney, Trial Counsel, and Command Judge Advocate. In August 2005, Professor Thomas deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During her time as a Screaming Eagle with the 101st Airborne Division, Professor Thomas successfully completed Air Assault School and was awarded the Combat Action Badge and the Bronze Star Medal.

Professor Thomas resigned her active duty commission and separated from the U.S. Army on January 4, 2007 and moved to Chicago, IL where she join the Illinois Attorney General's Office as the Assistant Chief of the Military and Veterans' Rights Bureau and served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Special Litigation Bureau.

Professor Thomas now joins Chapman University School of Law as a Visiting Assistant Professor and will be working with the Military Personnel Law Center & AMVETS Clinic.
